You know what I mean. Most people go around saying that there aren't many artsy things to do in Haliburton. They say that Hal High is a jock school, or that living up here is boring.
These people obviously haven't lived here very long.
Every night, or at least every weekend, there is something going on in the highlands. Haliburton is a fabolous venue for well-known bands like The Wild Strawberries, as well as unknown bands (well, at least to those outside of Hal High, anyways!) like Neocortex. There's an open stage that takes place almost every Saturday night at the Wild Oat Cafe at 8pm, and reportedly there is also an open stage at the Duke of Dysart on Sundays. How can people say that there is nothing going on?!
During the summer, Sir Sanford Fleming College runs the well-known school of fine arts, but this is expensive and not used as widely by the people of Haliburton as it is by the tourists. Another exciting thing happening is the Highlands Summer Festival, run entirely by residents of this fine county. Take a look at my article about it here.
During the rest of the year, there are still all sorts of things to do. The Highlands Wind Symphony, a local band, meets at JDHES every Monday evening. There is a Haliburton County Children's Choir, which also includes the Haliburton County Youth & Chamber Choirs, and they meet every Saturday morning to sing. (They also hold concerts twice during the year).
Even if you're not a part of any of these groups, there are many things to do. There are always people who want to get together and write or jam or whatever! And there are always the groups at the school, like the Red Hawk Theatre Company, the Literary Society (when it's running), and the Art Club. So give it a try! You'll find there's lots to do in the Highlands.
